Donald Trump has rescinded numerous executive orders from prior administrations all the way back to the 1960s, under the guise of saving the United States. |
Consistent with the United States backtracking on policies that protect the LGBTQ+ community from criminalization, Trump has rescinded more policies that protect Americans from disease, prosecution, persecution, economic corruption, labor abuses, etc...He has eliminated longstanding orders that have since been approved under law, by Congress, all the way back to the 1960s. I won't rehash all the kinds of policies he eliminates again.
Here is a limited list of past executive orders and memoranda rescinded today, which are at least a little different from the kinds of orders he has already rescinded. These tell us a lot about President Trump's thoughts behind these issues, given current circumstances.
Data Driven Responses To Public Health Threats: This ordered the Federal Government to coordinate with local and State government entities to gather information about bacterial and viral infections in order to create more proper, reasoned, responses to future epidemics and pandemics. This was issued by President Biden because the Trump response was so haphazard and filled with misinformation that there was national overreaction and underreaction, leading to the deaths of more than 1 million Americans in the first year of the COVID -19 pandemic.
This order comes as we have a measles epidemic spreading out from Texas.
Domestic Mining For Critical Minerals: Biden recognized the threats that Trump has acknowledged: Our lack of domestic sources of critical minerals for emerging markets for batteries, such as nickel, lithium and other minerals. His policy was to find our own sources of these minerals and begin exploiting those sources.
Trump has attempted to exploit Ukraine for these minerals, and on many occasions, including yesterday, expressed a desire to annex Canada into the United States in part, for these minerals.
There were other executive actions similar to this, promoting domestic production of things like solar panels, baby formula and insulation, rather than depending on imports for these products, as a matter of national defense.
Transfer of Arms To Foreign Governments: This required foreign governments receiving weapons from the Department of Defense, to provide guarantees that they would not commit war crimes such as genocide, ethnic cleansing, or other crimes against humanity.
President Trump, and the Christian Nationalists and other fascist elements that are taking control of the United States seek to remove all Palestinians from their homeland, for example, which would require that foreign governments continue to bomb Gaza into oblivion until the remaining people find a way to flee, or are dead. The last I checked, Israel had slaughtered over 60,000 people in Gaza, and no neighboring nation, such as Egypt, is willing to allow Gazans to seek refuge.
ADDED ON MARCH 18: Only 4 days after Trump rescinded this order, Israel began bombarding Gaza with bombs again.
Reforming Federal Support For Tribal Nations: This order requires various Federal agencies that work with tribal nations to review their processes and our treaties, to assure we are following through with our promises and not impeding through bureaucratic processes the financial and other support guaranteed to tribes.
During his first term, President Trump and his MAGA followers frequently showed blatant disregard for tribal lands, and tribes in general, including many of our treaties with them. Already in his current term, the administration has attempted to claim that Native Americans are not also United States citizens by birthright, in defiance of the 14th Amendment. This week, Trump requested an emergency opinioni from the Supreme Court, asking them to overturn the longstanding interpretation of the 14th Amendment.
Trump originally issued an executive order ending birthright citizenship on inauguration day, but that order was blocked in Federal court, leading to Trump's appeal to the Supreme Court.
