Earlier in his administration, Trump suspended the duty free de minimus for tariffs. He did so on his declaration off a national emergency, ostensibly to fight drug trafficking through the shipment of small packages. None of that makes any sense. How does imposing tariffs fight drug trafficking. If anyone has the funds to pay extra for tariffs, it's the people earning millions trafficking drugs to the United States. Nonetheless, we are no longer able to order items from other nations without paying extra in the form of tariffs.
Trump affirmed his previous orders on de minimus duty free shipments in a new executive order. Consumers who order items from overseas will pay a minimum of the tariff from the nation of origin for those items; however, they could pay more. Shipping companies are given the option of charging the tariff assigned to the country of origin, or a dollar amount based on the tariff assigned to the country of origin.
These excuses for taxing Americans are completely acceptable to Trump fans, most of whom have been told that the nations of origin actually pay those taxes, and who believe whatever Trump tells them.
In addition, another executive order from today sets a 50% tariff on all forms of copper shipped from outside the country. Copper wires are almost entirely shipped from outside the country, and are a required component of almost all electronics technologies. We also import plumbing fittings from other nations. This action will further increase prices across the board for electronics and plumbing.
