President Trump told reporters on Friday that he has positioned two nuclear submarines near Russia. This is in retaliation to a statement from former Russian President and current Deputy Chair of the Russian Federation Security Council, Dimitri Medvedev.
Medvedev announced that Russia was no longer going to abide by a moratorium on medium and long range nuclear weapons, in retaliation for NATO's lack of support for Russia's invasion of Ukraine. “This is a new reality all our opponents will have to reckon with. Expect further steps.” he stated on the platform formerly known as Twitter.
Trump responded on Truth Social, "“Based on the highly provocative statements of the Former President of Russia, Dmitry Medvedev, who is now the Deputy Chairman of the Security Council of the Russian Federation, I have ordered two Nuclear Submarines to be positioned in the appropriate regions, just in case these foolish and inflammatory statements are more than just that."
This escalation between the world's most toxicly armed nuclear powers comes just before a deadline Trump has given Russia to act in good faith in the Ukraine peace talks, after which he says he will apply additional sanctions to Russia.
We don't actually know whether Trump has ordered submarines to Russia, or whether he will sanction Russia. We only know that, at face value, this is what he has said. I give the submarines a 30/70 chance of being true. If I had to guess, I'd say the subs have not been ordered any closer to Russia, and it's all just bluster. Time will tell.
