Starting almost immediately after the inauguration, ICE began posting its daily arrests on the platform formerly known as Twitter. Each day, it reported 600, 800, 900...people arrested. The only day it broke 1,000 was on January 29. On February 1, they posted the numbers from January 31: 864 arrests. In the 15 days since, there have been no reports. Instead, they focus on reporting the criminality (both charged and alleged) of certain individuals.
Leaks from the White House began to report that President Trump is angry that ICE isn't making more arrests. Trump's promise on inauguration day—and during the campaign— is that he would deport "millions and millions" of undocumented immigrants. To keep his promise, ICE would have to arrest thousands of people each day.
Meanwhile, their parent agency is reporting numbers in terms of percentages, which hides actual numbers from the President. The percentages, when translated into numbers, don't come anywhere close to beating President Obama's highest year of deportations.
Meanwhile, DOGE is reporting enormous amounts of funding for various agencies is being arbitrarily cut off. The Department of Education reports it cut off an amount equal to 90% of its research and development funds (I wrote about this on February 13). Other agencies report they are slashing funds as well.
I can't help but wonder if they're hoodwinking the president. I can't prove they are, and time will tell if the Department of Education really does cut all those funds, for example. But I have a sneaking suspicion that agency officials may be feeding Trump the soothing news he wants, and not the factual news.
If ICE can show him daily reports of attempted rapists being arrested, of alleged murderers, etc...then he will believe his will is being done. If the Department of Education (and others), issue press releases simply saying that such-and-such funding was cut, then he'll believe them. Also, unscrupulous right-wing news pundits will believe them, and mainstream news will be abuzz with it, all to create a spectacle that President Trump revels in.
I won't make speculation my primary focus on this blog, because I know how annoying it is. It annoys me that there's a possibility that the numbers these agencies are reporting might be fake, and they're really hoodwinking everyone. I'll be keeping an eye out for evidence that agencies are lying to the Administration.
