In January 2025, the House of Representatives passed the "Wounded Knee Massacre Memorial and Sacred Site Act" which preserves a site where the United States Army massacred hundreds of members of the Lakota tribe in cold blood.
Nearly a year later, President Trump signed it into law with little fanfare. When Trump does something that would anger his MAGA base, the right-wing news doesn't cover it. Neither does the mainstream media make it a headline, because it is generally dwarfed by bigger headlines from the many malevolent things the administration is also doing.
The Republican representative who sponsored the law said at the time it passed, "“In 2023, I visited the site of the Wounded Knee Massacre. I met with descendants of the survivors, and I saw the bloodstained floorboards of St. John’s Church where the wounded were treated. It was a tragic day in America’s history. My bill acknowledges our mistake and ensures this land will be sacred for generations to come.”
