The White House announced a deal with drugmaker Astra Zeneca, a European pharaceutical company, to provide prescription drugs for Medicaid at a price equal to the lowest prices given to other industrialized nations. Historically, the United States is charged a higher price.
Additionally, if the press release and other information is true, Astra Zeneca has promised to build more facilities in the United States. In exchange, the company will get a 3 year reprieve from Trump's tariffs.
The specifics are light right now. It seems Medicaid will pay less for these drugs, and people who get their prescriptions through TrumpRX.gov, a website that will offer lower drug prices for uninsured or underinsured people.
Astra Zenexca is the second major drugmaker to strike a deal with the Trump Administration. Pfizer was the first. I look forward to seeing more details on both these deals and also to seeing how TrumpRX works, and whether its prices really are affordable.
