A Deal With Australia For Critical Minerals

The Trump Administration announced a series of deals with Australia today that ostensibly strengthens the economic and military ties we have with Australia.

Foremost is a critical minerals joint venture between our nations. President Trump has been seeking sources for critical minerals as his Chinese tariff war continues. China famously holds the world market on these minerals which include lithium, cobalt, nickel, rare earth elements, and graphite. These are critical components of modern technology, including cell phones and computers, and are important elements in modern warfare and defense.

In April, Trump ordered the Secretary of Commerce to analyze our global supply chain of critical earth minerals. At the time, China had slowed our supply of the minerals to a trickle under the guise of bureaucratic red tape. Since then, they have further restricted these exports to the U.S.

Trump desperately tried to force Ukraine to give the United States first rights to all its minerals, but that deal fell apart spectactularly in front of the world. It is telling that Trump continued to try to make deals with Ukraine after such a public embarrassment. Only a few weeks later, a deal was struck that would treat Ukraine as a partner to the United States rather than another country to be looted by the United States.

The deal with Austrialia is a parternship as well, in which both countries would invest in each other's rare earth mining infrastructure and supply chains, and both countries will invest billions of dollars in this venture.
