The Trump Administration plans to bail out Argentina's economy by purchasing Argentine bonds and trading dollars for pesos. This announcement has been unpopular on both the left and the right.
This is a move to help Argentina's economy in the face of upcoming mid-term elections in the country, where the Trump-like Argentine President's party is currently on track to lose power in the government.
Javier Milei was elected President of Argentina in November 2023. He was elected as a populist after a time when inflation had devastated the Argentine economy. He ran on the promise of government reform and a credo, "Freedom Advances!" and upon taking office immediately began declaring states of emergency and issuing executive orders. By the one year mark, he had not reined in the inflation rate. Prices in most sectors were still rising.
Despite cutting government spending substantially and improving the budget, there was no actual improvement in the economy after his first year.
Furthermore, American billionaires and hedge fund managers have invested substantial funds on Argentine government bonds that are at high risk of default, and it is clear that this bailout will help those wealthy Americans maintain the wealth they unwisely invested.
