Alaska was the center of the world stage yesterday, when President Trump and President Putin of Russia met there to negotiate a cease fire for the war that Russia started in Ukraine over three years ago.
President Trump ran his campaign, in part, with the promise that he would end the war in Ukraine in 24 hours. Now, over 200 days on, President Trump walked away from Alaska having canceled lunch plans with Putin, praising the Russian leader publicly, and hashing out no agreement at all, including the ceasefire.
The stated goal of Russia is that Ukraine must give 5 regions of its country to Russia—large portions of these regions are not even held by Russia. Ukraine must also give up all attempts to join Nato. The goal of the United States for this meeting was a cease fire. So, there was a large imbalance in goals for this meeting, and that's why it failed. Ukraine was not invited to the table: Another reason the meeting failed.
Yet, another reason it failed is because the approach of Trump, which is something like a "strength through weakness" tactic, is stupid, and cannot ever bring peace to Ukraine without Ukraine yielding completely to Russia and giving Putin everything he wants.
Another issue—more of an illustration of the Trump administration's incompetence than anything else—is that the entire agenda for the day was left at the printer of the Alaska hotel. This is how we know that Putin left early, and plans were canceled for the day. Trump's plans were ruined and we know this now, and it's because of the lack of data security in the administration.
Nothing will end well for Ukraine as long as the United States is the most powerful supporter of Ukraine. The European Union needs to step up and finally be strong and stop sucking at the United States' infected teat.
