President Trump has ordered a comprehensive review of key Smithsonian museums in order to assure that all displays are aligned with MAGA politics.
The letter states, "This initiative aims to ensure alignment with the President's directive to celebrate American exceptionalism, remove divisive or partisan narratives, and restore confidence in our shared cultural institutions."
Although this order is new, it follows an order from March that required that museums remove aspects of American history that are "divisive." Some museums have already begun to adjust their public displays. For example, the National Museum of American History has already removed portions history regarding Trump's first administration which could be considered embarrassing to the president, such as his two impeachments.
This order establishes a more coherent game plan compared to the March executive order. Museums are given 120 days to comply, for example. And there is a more robust plan for reviewing all the displays and the funding sources.
As with other actions under Trump, this is another action that will move us further toward the kind of fascism the MAGA movement wants for our country; adjusting history to fit their whims and mythology and make them feel good and righteous.
