The President Doesn't Care About the Constitution: Some Executive Orders

 The president moved to end cashless bail nationwide today, by threatening to withhold Federal funds from any jurisdictions that allow cashless bail. The cashless bail allows judges to choose no bail for an alleged criminal after considering factors such as the person's ability to pay. risk of fleeing, and risk of committing new crimes while out on bail. Several States, namely Illinois, have instituted no cash bail in recent years. 

The argument from the administration includes examples of criminals committing new crimes while out on no-cash bail, or fleeing. However, research shows that no-cash bail policies do not increase crime. 

The balance of constitutional rights and justice can be tricky. But over the generations we have come down on the side of bails that are not onerous.  This is enshrined in the Constitution, in the eighth amendment.

Also today, President Trump signed an executive order requiring the Department of Justice to pursue people who burn or desecrate the American Flag under the following circumstances:

"while causing harm unrelated to expression, consistent with the First Amendment. This may include, but is not limited to, violent crimes; hate crimes, illegal discrimination against American citizens, or other violations of Americans’ civil rights; and crimes against property and the peace, as well as conspiracies and attempts to violate, and aiding and abetting others to violate, such laws."

Because we have seen what Trump considers "hate crime," and "illegal discrimination" and "violations of...civil rights," we know that Trump intends to persecute anyone practicing their rights to assemble, if he doesn't like what they have to say. I know this, you know this, and everyone else knows this.

Additionally today, the president signed an order ramping up military activity among civilians in Washington D.C.
