After high profile stories about international tourists being strip-searched, imprisoned and deported, most industrialized nations have warned their people against traveling to the United States. The entire European Union, Canada, England, and others have told their citizens that the US is not a safe place to travel. And they're not wrong. They could be jailed for weeks if Border Patrol find a political meme on their Facebook page mocking American Conservatives.
Aside from their nations telling them to stay away, people cite a disdain for the United States as another reason not to visit. President Trump has worsened the problem by raising ticket prices to National Parks for international tourists. The president has turned our nation into an undesireable place to visit.
Forbes calculates tourism losses at up to $29 billion this year. However, this estimate is conservative, because it doesn't account for the down line economics, such as the value of jobs for people in the tourism industry.
In the United States, 17 million jobs are wrapped up intimately with the tourism industry. And international tourism accounts for a substantial percentage of the overall business. When a hotel closes or downsizes, for example, those are jobs that disappear. When a tour company closes down, those are jobs closing down.
I'm not sure Trump is emotionally or psychologically capable of changing course. If things continue this way, the US will lose tens of billions in international tourist spending, and untold billions more in job and business losses.
