President Trump issued a memorandum to promote more "freedom and democracy" for Cuba. In this memorandum, Trump reiterates the complete embargo on Cuba, while stating he wants to promote individual freedoms for Cuban people in the country. He will work with the Office of Cuban Broadcasting to review Cuban access to information through the internet.
I had no idea before this order that the United States operates a propaganda television and radio station aimed at people in Cuba. President Trump attempted to close this down back in March, but quickly changed course, along with other DOGE cuts.
The memorandum requires that Commerce, State and Defense assure that there is absolutely no tourism to Cuba and aims to deny the United Nations to lift any embargoes. This hurts Cubans. The stated goal of hurting the Cuban government is nonsense.
Nestled into this memorandum is an order to refuse Cuban immigrants who come to our shores and expedite the deportation of Cubans from the United States. Earlier this month, President Trump's administration ended the temporary protected status of hundreds of thousands of people, including Cubans.
This memorandum really doesn't do anything to help the cuban people. Talking about their internet access is not "helping" them. Sending Cubans back to a country they escaped is not helping them. This memorandum's purpose is primarily to hurt people.
