President Trump has been offered a luxury jet by the nation of Qatar to use as Air Force One. Trump critics and allies both have rallied together in rare solidarity to tell him not to accept the gift. Most point to the emoluments clause in the Constitution, which forbids elected officials to accept gifts from other nations.
Trump intends to accept the gift.
He visited Qatar this week and the White House issued a press release in which Trump claims credit for all the deals Qatar has with various US companies for weapons and defense materials. The press release praises Qatar for its investments in the United States.
An aspect of Trumpism that the White House proudly announces on the website is his love for foreign investment, in which jobs are created in the US, but all the profits are sent overseas. So, while the tariffs hurt regular Americans, Trump has no problem enriching foreign rich people. He talks a lot about trade imbalances, but sees no issue turning converting trade imbalances into profits for foreign rich people.
I suspect the payoff Qatar receives from Trump with the bribe of a luxury jet, is that he will fully support all their efforts even if they are not positive for the United States.
