President Signals Reduction of FEMA

The flag of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA)

The President ordered a review of a large number of executive actions from the past, in order to update them, with regard to national preparedness. He stated that it is his policy that State and local governments, and individuals, take the lead role in being prepared for national emergencies. I take this as a step in the direction of dismantling agencies like FEMA.

The order states, "Preparedness is most effectively owned and managed at the state, local, and even individual levels, supported by a competent, accessible, and efficient federal government...When states are empowered to make smart infrastructure choices, taxpayers benefit."

I wouldn't be surprised if FEMA is reduced to a funding source, and groups such as the National Guard make up the human resource part of Federal emergency response, leaving to States and local governments the vast majority of preparations. I believe that preparedness at State, local and individual levels, as a matter of principle, is a good idea.
