Migrants Sent To South Sudan In Defiance of Courts

The United States has been sending migrants from Myanmar and Vietnam to the nation of South Sudan.

Despite Federal Court orders that migrants cannot be removed outside the United States without hearings, the Trump Administration continues to defy those orders, removing people without any due process and in defiance of habeus corpus. An order on Tuesday requires that the administration retain custody of migrants sent to South Sudan, in case any prisoners are ordered back.

Just yesterday, Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security, Kristi Noem, told a Senate Committee yesterday that habeus corpus is "a constitutional right that the president has to be able to remove people from this country and suspend their rights."

The response from Senator Maggie Hassan cut her off. "That is incorrect."

Habeus corpus, in short, grants every person the right to a court hearing; the right not to be held without reason by the government. It is a fundamental right granted to every person in the United States.

I believe this is a capitulation of the courts, and the method in which Trump plans to remove freedoms. The court orders began with "do not remove them, and bring them back if you've already removed them" when the first round of El Salvador prisoners occurred. But now, only 2 months later, the order is, "make sure you can bring them back."

This reduction in American freedom by openly defying constitutional order should be alarming to every American.
