The United States Department of Education announced today that it would eliminate almost half of its positions. Employees will be placed on permanent paid leave on March 21, 2025, and will be paid until June when their contracts run out.
The press release states:
When President Trump was inaugurated, the Department’s workforce stood at 4,133 workers. After today’s actions, the Department’s workforce will total roughly 2,183 workers. Included in the reduction in force are nearly 600 employees who accepted voluntary resignation opportunities and retirement over the last seven weeks, including:313 employees accepted the Voluntary Separation Incentive Payment
Remaining employees impacted by the reduction in force will be placed on administrative leave beginning next Friday, March 21. Pursuant to regulatory requirements and the Department’s collective bargaining agreement, all impacted employees will receive full pay and benefits until June 9th, as well as substantial severance pay or retirement benefits based upon their length of service.
Who Is Doing This?
Secretary of Education, Linda McMahon, who has no experience teaching, administering, or doing anything else as a school executive, was nominated and seated by the Senate. Trump told her that her duty was to "put herself out of a job."
McMahon and other right-wing politicians push for what they call school choice. Although I don't want to write an essay on school choice here, the scheme involves families with a small to great means receiving government funds to help them pay for private schools, while impoverished families will have to use whatever funds remain for public schools in their area. In short, impoverished families will receive an impoverished education compared to other families.
What Does The Department of Education Do?
It is the goal of far right-wing politicians to terminate the U.S. Department of Education. With only a few thousand employees, the department plays a critical role in making sure that all schools are following Federal laws, including civil and human rights laws. The department also gathers national data so Americans know the state of our schools and our education system. The department also participated in research and development until February, when all funds for research and development were cut. I wrote about that here.
Without the Department of Education, there will be no watchdog to guarantee that all schools provide at least a minimally adequate education.
