White House Takes Over Press Access
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt announced today that the journalists who would have access to the President would be chosen by the White House from now on. For 100 years, the press have been chosen by an independent group, to assure that no press were excluded for political reasons.
In the last two weeks, President Trump has excluded the Associated Press from important events, because the AP continues to call the sea located between Mexico and Texas the Gulf of Mexico, although the president has issued an executive order changing its name to the Gulf of America. The Associated Press sued the administration, resulting in Trump's Administration that they were taking control over the press who gets access to White House briefings, announcements, etc...
Securing America's Copper Supply
President Trump ordered the Secretary of Commerce to begin an investigation into the United States copper supply.
The U.S. imported 0% of its copper in 1991, and in 2024 imported 45% of its copper, and the administration wants to find out if this represents a national security threat.
The vast majority of U.S. copper imports are from Canada, followed by Hungary, Mexico and Japan, all at a very small level. This move by the Trump Administration is likely aimed at casting more aspersions at trading partners Canada and Mexico. With that said, copper is extremely important for the American electrical infrastructure, and becoming more copper independent and assessing the future of our copper supply is not a bad idea in itself.
We know when it comes to Americas allies, Trump does nearly everything at least in part out of spite, and only time will tell if this study yields useful and actionable information, or if it's merely another tool to punch Canada in the face.
