Under Title IX, an educational amendment to the Civil Rights Act of 1964—which seeks to protect people from sexual discrimination and sexual assault—President Trump issued an executive order seeking to ban transgender women from participating in women's sports. The order rescinds all Federal funds from schools that allow transgender women to play women's sports.
The order also requires diplomats representing the United States in the United Nations, to apply the same policies there. It orders the Secretary of State and the Secretary of Homeland Security to prevent transgender athletes to enter the United States for the purpose of playing sports, and orders the Secretary of State to work with the International Olympics Committee to change their policies to align with the administration. This and other policies contained in the order can be found on the White House website.
During a press conference today, Press Secretary Caroline Leavitt walked back Trump's statements from February 4, in which he declared the United States would take ownership of the Gaza Strip. In fact, she implied he had never made such a declaration. However, she stuck by his statement that the Palestinians would need to be completely removed from Gaza, and other aspects of his statements that are similarly a non-starter for many countries in the Middle East as well as most of the world.
ICE holding facilities are currently overflowing. Detention facilities, which are located largely in various jails around the country, have room for 38,521, but are currently holding 42,000 immigrants. ICE has released 160 people as of today in order to meet statutory human rights requirements regarding the population rates in facilities.
Immigration and Customs Enforcement has plans to expand, housing immigrants in bases owned by the Department of Defense, such as a Space Force facility in Colorado, and the detention facility at Guantanamo bay. They also hope to build a number of facilities that will hold over 50,000 people.
The process for deportation can take months, as due process is required by law, and orders of deportation must be given by an immigration court. Currently, ICE is detaining over 1,000 people per day, with plans to increase detentions.
The math simply doesn't work out to match what ICE has planned with the number of space available, even if they were able to build the facilities overnight.
