Passports applications by transgender people are being suspended and renewals denied, under Trump's State Department. |
President Trump's orders to remove all mention of transgender and non-binary people from all forms, publications and websites; his order removing them from the military; his scapegoating, are beginning to show other real-world consequences. All mention of transgender people have been removed from Federal websites, and pages dedicated to LGBTQ issues have been modified or removed entirely, and are showing back up edited, with all mentions of T and Q removed. The sites still mention lesbian, gay and bisexual people, when necessary, but are otherwise removed and currently unavailable.
Passport problems are being reported. People who have transitioned and received passports with their transitioned gender, cannot renew their passports. Three rules for passports under Trump's State Department dictate that one cannot claim anything but male or female as their gender; they cannot change their gender; and the gender they claim must be the sex on their original birth certificate. This means that a person who was born male, transitioned to female, and received her passport, is ineligible to renew her passport at all. She cannot claim to be female and she cannot change her gender back to male on her passport. She simply is not allowed to have a passport anymore.
At least one person has reported being turned away by passport offices in this manner, and many more will come as people who received their passports with their transitioned gender continue to apply for passport renewals.
