After a backlash from Trump's constituents as well as the immediate harm to the economy due to the tariff's he announced, President Trump backtracked on certain tariffs. He suspended tariffs on automotive parts and products from Canada and Mexico, and reduced the potash tariff from Canada to 10% from 25%.
United States agriculture in the Midwest requires potash from Canada for fertilizer. American taxpayers help fund farming through subsidies, and Trump's tariff on any agricultural supplies, including fertilizer, is an added burden on Americans, as it not only increases the prices of good by consumers, but also the amount taxpayers have to subsidize.
The automotive industry amounts to 3% of American gross domestic product, and automakers work on thin margins, and a 25% increase in prices of supplies from Canada and Mexico may have been a death sentence.
